Thank you for considering volunteering to foster a Samoyed in need! Fostering is a rewarding and truly special experience. By opening your home, you're providing love, patience, and structure to help a dog feel secure and ready for adoption. Your willingness to step forward makes an incredible impact. Your kindness becomes the bridge between their past and their forever family, and we couldn’t do this life-changing work without people like you. Your willingness to step forward as Sammy foster parent makes an incredible impact!
WHAT DO FOSTER FAMILIES NEED TO PROVIDE? Our Samoyeds need a safe, loving home with time for socialization and exercise. They will require patience and positivity as they adjust. Foster families provide daily care, transport to vet visits, and cover food, treats, toys, and enrichment. We do not allow pinch, prong, choke, or ecollars.
HOW LONG WILL THE DOG NEED TO BE IN FOSTER CARE? Foster dogs ideally stay in one home until adoption, as we don’t have a boarding facility relying solely on foster homes. The average foster stays about 2 months. If you're participating in foster-adopt, the typical duration is roughly a month.
CAN IF FOSTER A DOG IF I DO NOT HAVE A FENCED IN YARD? Yes. All outdoor activities are required to be supervised on leash. We do not allow dogs to be exercised off leash in unfenced areas or at dog parks.
WHERE DO THESE SAMOYEDS COME FROM? The dogs in need of foster care come from one of two situations: Amish puppy mill breeders and dogs being rehomed. We have built relationships with individuals who coordinate the release of Puppy Mill dogs throughout Wisconsin. Rehomed dogs could come directly from their owner or from another shelter in the Midwest and Texas. Want more information on what to expect when fostering a mill dog? Check out Carol's Canine Training blog post. All mill dogs are somewhat different, but her blog provides a good general idea of what to consider: Fostering/Adopting the Puppy Mill Dog | Carol's Canine Training
WHAT IF I WANT TO KEEP MY FOSTER DOG? If you want to adopt a foster dog, please contact your foster coordinator to formally request to adopt your foster. You'll be in constant contact with your foster coordinator to inform them prior to your foster dog being available for adoption to the public. This is the same process used for foster-to-adopt.
AM I ALLOWED TO SHARE AND FIND A HOME FOR MY FOSTER DOG?
You are absolutely allowed to share on social media and with your friends and family about your foster dog! This is a great way to market your foster and help them get a headstart on finding their forever home! All PAS dogs are required to go through the formal application and adoption process. Foster homes can give input on applications, but they are not allowed to select the adoptive home for their dog on their own.
